Note: This is a full-time temporary Administrative position (37.5 hours per week) for 1-year from the date of hire.

Duties: Under the general direction of the Senior Manager, Biotechnology Research Labs, the Specialist, Packaging Advancement (Research) is a member of the Centre for Research and Innovation (CRI) lab research team and is responsible for exploring and/or developing sustainable packaging materials, alternative packaging materials with advanced properties, improving the packaging process to address the needs and challenges of the sponsoring industry partner. For example, exploring the utilization of plant/organic waste in prototyping a material that could practically be used as packaging option, comparing various materials as packaging material for a particular suite of products – depending on the industry segment in context (could range from food/ beverage to automotive and others).

The incumbent will lead multiple research projects focusing on the latest advancements in packaging science/engineering, packaging materials development, and processes optimization to meet the needs of industry partners, and in collaboration with CRI technicians, faculty members, and Fanshawe students.
  • Post-secondary 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Science, Packaging Technology, Material Science/Engineering, or a related field such as (but may not be limited to) Manufacturing Engineering/Technology/Science and Environmental Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years’ of hands-on experience in new product and/or processes development in the Packaging Industry
  • Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification
  • Experience in packaging material development, packaging process improvement is strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
